There are a variety of rugs for sale online. Whether you are looking for a hand-made rug or a machine made rug or whether you would like to buy a modern or an antique rug all different types and sizes are available.

Firstly define the size of the rug you would like to buy by measuring it out in the room you would like to purchase it for. You can do this by cutting an old sheet to the required size and moving it around the room until you get the desired effect. If it you want a round rug you can use electrical tape to mark the edge out. Or you can cut pieces of paper and position them until you get the correct size as this is one of the most important things to consider when buying a rug.

If you are choosing a rug to go under a dining room table it is best to pull all the chairs out to the position they would be in when everyone gets up to stand. That way you will not have the situation where the chairs pull at the sides of the rug. If it is an area rug you want to buy (that is where the rug fits most of the room) then it is best to leave a border of flooring around your rug to give it a frame that looks good.

Choosing the right colour and pattern of rug for your room is extremely important as this will bring the interior design of your room together.  There are no hard and fast rules to choosing the colour other than you do not want your rug to clash with other furnishings in your room. Most people choose one main colour with one or two extra colours that compliment its surroundings. There are normally three different patterns to rugs for you to choose from these are curvilinear which is patterns with curved lines or swirls, pictorial which normally displays images of scenery, animals etc or geometric that is made up of squares, rectangles or just plain lines.

Do your research first by looking at the various styles that there is available. Some styles of rugs that are available are Indian, Persian, Oriental, Tibetan to name a few. You know what your taste is and you will often see something you like that is of a particular style so make a note of it and search for that particular style of rug.

Consider also purchasing a rug pad. Rug pads are handy for a variety of reasons. Once you have your rug properly positioned on top of the pad it will prevent the rug from wrinkling or slipping. If you get pads that are waterproof this can stop colours bleeding through to a lighter carpet underneath in the event of a spillage. It can also help to dampen the impact of people walking making the rug feel soft and bouncy. Some rugs can scratch laminate and wood flooring after a period of time so using these pads can also prevent this problem.

Always have a budget and stick to it because you will easily be able to spend more than you really can afford.
